Good question. Tears are basically secreted by your lachrymal glands above the eye via tear ducts. There are several types of tears including basal (oil-based, for lubrication), reflex (to clean the eye), and crying (emotional). Most tears are full of waters, oils, salts, etc.

After you cry a lot, there is little available for lubricating the eye or for cleaning it. Hence, until the gland fills up again, you will experience a little discomfort and dryness.

You should put in some off-the-shelf saline solution available at most pharmacies, that should let you tide over the physical discomfort. Unfortunately, emotional distress takes a little TLC and just plain time.

Hope this helps. Check the sources for more information.

Tears have a lot of salt in them, so that may be a cause. If the burning is really bad, call an Optometrist.
I hope whatever you are crying about gets better! (:

Do you use make-up? Maybe it goes into your eyes?
