It is bad because of the pounding, but if your knees and ankles are in good shape it won't cause damage, and in that case it's good for you because of the heart and lung benefits.

Running can be bad if you have joint problems. Use elliptical machines instead. No impact and a good amount of cardio at the same time.

I heard it can be bad on knees and joints if they are weak, but running on grass reduces the impact. Overall though, it's great for your heart.
