The forms and instructions need to be revised following the renewal of numerous tax provisions that had expired (or were about to). Anyone who attempts to prepare a return based on what is posted at irs.gov is asking for trouble.
If you are not working, I imagine you will not wish to pay to file your return. If you think you can do your return yourself, go to irs.gov on or after January 12th, click on the FreeFile icon and select the provider which provides the lowest cost return. The IRS does not accept electronically filed returns before january 12th.
If you have a checking acount, I suggest having your refund deposited directly to there. You enter the details on the tax return, towards the bottom of page 2 (have your checkbook handy - that is where the numbers come from. Please do not copy from a deposit slip). Assuming you get your return completed and accepted by the IRS by January 18th, you will have your refund by the 26th. Realistically, that is the quickest you can receive it.
If you have any doubts about your ability to complete an accurate return, please consult a CPA or go to H & R Block. They will not finalise a return for you until the dates stated above.

You would need your W2 form to verify your income, and usually every companies send those out that the beginning of every year. So expect them in the mail sometime early January. Now as to when you can file your taxes, people usually start around January (when their W2 arrived).
The IRS usually do not worry if you file your taxes early, just as long as you remember that the deadline is April 15 (unless it's the weekend, then it's due the very next business day).

You have to wait for your W2. The IRS will usually not start accepting electronically filed returns until around January 15th.
If you do not receive a W2 from this employer, you will need to call them and ask them about it. If at that point you still do not have one, the IRS starts taking substitute W2's electronically around the middle of February. To create a substitute W2, you need to have your last paycheck stub, so hang onto that.
Remember, W2's do not have to be mailed until January 31st. So, be patient.

If you file a paper return, you have to submit a copy of your W-2. No employer will generate W-2s before January. The earliest date to file electronically is Jan 12. You can download forms from the IRS website now, but you should check for changes after the first of the year.

You file the tax return by April 16th, 2007 (the 15th falls on a Sunday).
Many of the tax softwares are not available yet. If they are, it's all preliminary forms as none are officially finalized until Jan. 2007 (at least for most states).
If you file electronically, you don't need to file your W-2 with your return. If you don't, then a W-2 is needed with a paper return.
Generally, W-2's won't be available after Jan. 31 of the following year after the tax year ends.

You can only file without your W-2 if for some reason you are unable to get it -- typically because of insolvency and closure of the employing firm; sometimes because of their incompetence. Then you draft a "substitute W-2" if you have all the data (as you seem to have).
Here is how to contact the IRS if you have not received your W-2 by the end of January: http://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc154.html
I know some people who, in frustration, have made their own substitute W-2s using the model received from the same employer in previous years, and marking it "substitute". You aren't supposed to do that, but apparently it works. At least some of the time, may be most of the time. Unlike, say, Canadian T-4s, US W-2s aren't serial numbered.

I am fairly sure this is accurate but I believe you can file anytime after Jan 1st for the previous year. Of course you should have everything you need to file w2's et al.

You cannot file until January 2nd of the new year. The IRS doesn't release the finalized forms for the tax year that's ending until then.

G'day Rachel p,
Thank you for your question.
I have tried looking through the IRS frequently asked questions for you but I couldn't find it. They also have toll-free inquiry lines at 1-800-829-1040 for individual tax questions so give them a call on Monday.
I have attached sources for your reference.
Seasons greetings
