What did dogs eat before there was dog food?

Dogs are predators - turned natural scavengers. Just as it is a good idea to keep garbage cans away from dogs, it is a good idea to only expose it to food you want it to eat.

As scavengers, most will eat any and everything. Some dogs will even eat their own poop! (You can actually buy an additive to put in their food to discourage this).

The short answer - everything they could find or catch.

The same things dogs eat in many of the so-called third world countries today. Whatever they can find and/or hunt for themselves. One person here mentioned meat and noodles and that is correct. In many of the former communist countries where dogs are kept as working dogs, they feed them a diet of noodles and wild game. In Slovakia in particular they feed that to the Border patrol dogs that are working in the most extreme of conditions. They not only perform great but they also look unbelievably healthy and strong.

my grandma used to give her dog broken up bread and left over gravy and table food. I don't feed my dog dogfood in a can. He has allergies. I make his dog food every two weeks in a crockpot.
