Having invented this rule, we then obey another rule, which is to put the other person ahead of us. "You and I." This rather counteracts the egotistical effect of the capital letter!

i'm not an English native speaker...so my mistake, but as far as i know "I" is not a noun, but a pronoun...About the question: i had the same thought in my head some time ago, that capitalizing the first person pronoun shows little modesty. Probably this fact is more obvious for foreigners, than for those who are not user to question language "facts".

Hi,I like to capitalize the I because it is easier to see and read, then some one straining them selves .So if some one does not like it ,do not read it.That is the reason I use the capital I.Give us a break, compared to some things I see on the web, this is not a major item to squabble over, thank you.

"I" is the center of self. There is a very good book on the matter but I can't remember the name of it. Was written back in the 80's and is very"heady'.

In German, ALL nouns are capitalized, not just I, but Car, House, Dog, Bratwurst-- all nouns. So I guess this blows your theory.
