It depends on the drink. Margaritas customarily have salt on the rim of the glass because it accents the taste of the tequila. Other sweet drinks, like a chocolate martini, usually have sugar around the rim for accent. Depending on the drink, bars will usually flavor the sugar, too, with things like cinnamon, lemon or cocoa. It's not really necessary. It's just extra garnish, like a twist of lime or a cherry.
Try this:
Pomegranate & Grapefruit "Martini"
Garnish a chilled martini glass by dipping first into a shallow saucer of pomegranate juice, then into a shallow saucer of sugar to coat just the rim.
Combine equal parts (about 1 to 1 and 1/2 oz ea for 1 serving) pomegranate juice & grapefruit juice in a shaker with ice. Shake to chill and pour through a strainer into the martini glass. Enjoy!

Salt not sugar for margaritas. You moisten the rim with Roses Lime Juice and dip in the salt. The grocery store usually had a one inch high tub in the drink section that is specifically designed for this. They probably have a non-alcoholic margarita mix as well. The key with these things is to add some sprite and a little bit of fresh lemon juice to them as they can be a bit flat. Don't forget to garnish with a fresh lime wedge.

Salt on the edge of the glass for a margaritas. You can make any mix drink just leave the alcohol out. They do not taste bad.

Margaritas (and other sour drinks) get a rim of salt - rock or sea salt is better than the regular table stuff.
Sweet drinks get a rim of sugar.
Try Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider - served in a champagne flute, it looks just like champagne.

some drinks get salt on the rim and some sweeter drinks get sugar. most drinks can be made non-alcoholic and they will still look the same as the only thing missing is the alcohol

It's salt, but you can ask for it to be served without it.

And yes, ask for a Virgin Maragrita, or Pina Colada, or Daiquiri.

It will look exactly like it's alcohol-laced sibling.
