Different things work for different people.
I'm feeling rather sucsessful with the patches.
If you discuss it with the doc, they will help you find the best thing for you, and will give you a prescription - which is sooo much cheaper than buying patches or gum over the counter.

I have been smoking for over 10 years...
I am very, very, very, close to quiting...

How I started was I figured out what are the times I craved a smoke: Smoking in the car, smoking after eating, smoking while under stress at work, smoking when drinking...

Then I started with one craving and slowly phase it out...
I went from smoking 4 packs a week and am now down to 1-2 cigarettes a month... and have been that way for 3 years now...
sometimes even going 2-3 months with out a cigarette.

Now the only one I have difficulty with is smoking when I am drinking... Not smoking after 4 or 5 beers is the hardest thing to do. In order to combat this I now try to stay under 4 beers when I go out with friends... Some times it works... others times it doesn't...

I gave up smoking 2 and 1/2 years ago, I just said to my self, 'that's it, no more', I probably added something rude as well but can't remember! I had been smoking 25 (at least) each day for almost the same amount of years, I didn't use patches,gum or anything other than willpower, I felt like sh1t for about a month, I had terrible headaches, but I persevered and haven't smoked since.
Well done for wanting to give up.

It will be easy for you, as you have only smoked for such a small length of time!

smoke different brands of *** each day, silk cut lights, menthol etc, mainly ones you DONT like! Do this for a month before you intend to pack up.

Smoke the cheap crap fags everyone hates, they wont want your crash either or offer you theirs.

Tell everyone you are giving up on 31ST of January, in the meantime carry on as you are but have a cut off date, when you plan to stop. Let everyone think you will never stop and say what they want, but give up on that day anyway.

Treat giving up as your way of gettin out of an illness. Each day will be easier than the previous one too.

Keep a packet of fagss in your house, just don't smoke them, the temptation is always there but YOU are NOT going to smoke again are you!

Use chewing gums, and nicotine gums and patches, invest £50 in all sorts of patches and gum and buy fruit and drink water and fruit juice whenever you need a ***, and suck tunes and mints, they all make fags taste like cr@p too. But you wont be smoking anyway will YOU!

Phone the NHS helpline for advice and join a local group who are giving up too, give up with someone else if you can for support it makes it easier. Stay away from other smokers.

Take one day at a time.

Go for a 15 minute jog in the park each day and you will get fitter and feel the benefit.

Continue to tell yourself that each day is one step nearer to your ultimate goal to give up and save £3000 a year.

Tell yourself that you may even get to know your grandchildren and live long enough to see your pension and enjoy time doing what you want when you retire.

At the moment you are heading for a wooden box!

NICOTINE IS NOT ADDICTIVE - IT'S THE ROUTINE THAT'S HABIT FORMING! The cigarette companies market nicotine, that just fills your lungs with tar and rubbish and it takes 7 years for them to clear after giving up smoking.

THE NEXT CIGARETTE YOU SMOKE WILL BRING YOUR DEATH ONE DAY NEARER - and it won't just be lung cancer because when I was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2002 - 5 years after I gave up smoking - all the doctor could say was 'of course you were once a smoker!'

I gave up through the shock of being told I had the symptoms of Angina [heart disease] and never had another cigarette after hearing that, I was so angry with myself. Actually I misheard but by the time I found out I hadn't had a cigarette for 6 weeks, so just carried on!

If you really want to give up GET SOME SELF CONTROL and just stop buying them, stop smoking them and do something different every time you get the urge - like when the telephone rings, or you have a cup of coffee.

Try making yourself a cup of Che Mate Tea that's legal and very cheap compared with ciggies and not habit forming - but it does make you relaxed and that's all you smoke cigarettes for isn't it?

i gave up smoking last year, i used the patches 4 the 1st few days and then came off them. i have no had a ciggy since! definately do it u will feel so much better. Put the money u usually spend on fags in a jar before u know it u will have enough for a holiday! Good luck and believe that u can do it

Use Crafe Away dummy cigarettes. I did and haven't smoked for two and a half years, nor do I wish to. The physical craving only lasts a couple of days anyway, the main problem is psychological and the dummy cigarettes help with that more than patches could.

I personally gave up without the aid of patches,on new years eve 2005.I had tried the patches and they did seem to work but I just decided to try without and managed .I think I actually used gum this time(nicorette) and it tasted so horrid that It sort of put me off cigarettes also.Saying that I think with any treatment like that,its mind over matter.I did hear of someone who replaced their husbands patch with a regular plaster and wrote 'nicorette'on it.Needless to say he didn't notice any difference

Talk to your doctor. I'd suggest the patch and maybe Zyban/Wellbutrin (same thing) to help. Start taking the Zyban a few days before you plan to quit, then go on the patches and don't smoke at all (dangerous to smoke while on the patch - can even be fatal).
