It depends on your females attitude. If she is dominant you need to find a submissive female to go with her. I don't know about if getting a male would be different. I know my german shepard is the alpha female (except to me and my husband) and she gets along great with my golden retriever because she is a weenie and very submissive. However when we take her to my parents house my moms shepard mix is the alpha dog there and we have had many a dog fight in order to establish dominance. So we have to keep one pinned up at all times when over there. My shepard does seem to get along with male dogs but we dont have any in our family so I dont know from a lot of experience. Hope this helps

The sex of the dog you get does matter. If you have an established dog already, it's always wise to get a new dog of the opposite sex. They will not jostle for top position the way dogs of the same sex do. They also tend to get jealous of one another. :) It will also make a difference if your girl is desexed and if the new dog is desexed as well. Your dog's personality will also have a bearing on whether the two dogs will get along. Certain breeds/personalities are more tolerant or agressive. Is your girl a bossy one? When she is taken to the park, is she usually the dog who ends up on her back with the other dog sniffing her genitals, or is it the other way around? If she's a naturally dominant dog then you will have to be particularly careful of a new dog that is introduced into the household.
Rescue societies and also breeders will often recommend/allow you to bring your current dog to meet the proposed new dog. This is always best done on neutral turf so that none of the dogs is protective of their home ground. I would definitely do this if I were you. Good luck to you and your dog with the new one!

YES!!!
If you plan to get a puppy, it probably doesn't matter.
If you plan to get an older dog, DO NOT GET A FEMALE.
Female's are much more territorial. If you get another female, she may try to take over, and that would cause serious problems.
If you wanted to get an altered dog, it would not matter, especially if your dog is already altered.
Also, if your dog is altered, you are likely to encounter less problems.
Always give the dogs the same amount of attention.

When your family feel the time is right to introduce a new dog to the family, whether you choose to adopt from a rescue/breed rescue or purchase a well bred puppy from a responsible breeder, then there is nothing wrong in finding a companion for Stormy. If you particularly like Staffys {I'm very partial to them} then you could purchase a second Staff, but a Labrador would be fine too. I have seen plenty of Labs on my walks with the Dobes playing with Staffs. Good luck finding your new addition whenever you are ready. You can shed tears that he is gone or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday You can remember her and only that he’s gone or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back Or you can do what he’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go. Edit: Great pictures.

i have introduce two female boarder collies to an older(spayed) broader collie female with no problems.
i would suggest that you treat the two dogs in the same manor, it will make life easier for you.
you should get a puppy because the other dog could start to mother it.
i know it happen when introduce the older and younger dog to each other. just watch out for the silks form the older dog, it will come round.

Hi, what are the breeds? Some breeds IE., chihuahuas you should mix the sexes, all the time you have a male they will wee every where, but this is with chi's. Otherwise if you get her done, it will stop her season, otherwise you would have trouble keeping them apart. I personally would keep to the same sex, but, that's just how i feel.

Yes!! It matters immensely. I could not stress this to you enough. If you have an altered female I would suggest an altered male. Females tend to hold status in their pack and another female pup may threaten her status. I would advise a male pup.

As long as your 5 year female is spayed it should not matter. Breed would actually matter more than gender.

From what I've read, females tend to NOT get along with other females. Reasearch your dog's breed to be sure they will "play well with others". Pretty much depends on their tempermant, if they tend to be the "alpha" female or not. Females will fight each other till one gets severly injured, over males. My female Lab mix & boyfriends female were both alpha's & they had some terrible fights, including me getting bitten, trying to break them apart. Females & Males get along (cuz they have to) JUST BE SURE THEY ARE NEUTERED!!! We don't need more babies!

Do you want them to fight? coz 2 females will. if you have a dog then you may get an unwanted pregnancy......so i suggest getting one of them spayed.
