My husband is coming home from a deployment, and I am picking him up from the airport. My mother in law told me that I could go to the airline desk and get some sort of a pass to get through security to meet him at the gate even though I dont have a ticket. Since I have proper military ID can I pick up my soldier at the gate or is this a thing of the past?? or is she just crazy =) Any info wold be great I have never heard of this, it sounds to good to be true.

Not likely.
I work at an airport and we only give what we call gate passes to people who are picking up unaccompanied minors or people in wheelchairs or people who need other assistance.
I only work at the one airport, though, and don't know if others are different.

I highly doubt it, I watched a show on wounded soldiers coming back from Iraq, and the families had to wait outside the terminals, so I would assume that is a no, or else they would all be gathered at the gate, especially being TV.

I don't think a military ID gives you any special access anyways, unless you are assigned to that area, such as national guard with an assignment in the airport. However, they might show some sympathy. I really can't say, except that it looks grim.

Over the summer, I was flying into LGA from BOS on the US Airways Shuttle, and my Dad was able to come to the gate and greet me there. I'm only 15, but i did not use the Unaccompanied Minor service. He got a pass at the check-in counter.
However, this was before the whole terror scare with the liquid ban, so you might not be able to anymore.
You have a better chance at it if it's a smaller airport with smaller planes.

I dont think they do that. Airports have high security alert so they wouldn't allow you to go to the terminal. They probably ask that you wait until your husband exit the terminal. Military Id is usually have more privileges on a military base. But then again you can always call and see. If they tell you that you can be sure to get names. Good Luck

No, you cannot do this. Security will only allow people with boarding passes, or members of the flight crew, to enter the secure area.
