I want to buy a gift for someone who has a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II. Are you a digital photographer? what's your favorite accessory or tool? Is there a really neat gadget, lens, or filter I should look at?

It's getting close and I'm getting desperate -- any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Do NOT try to buy for this person! The best you can do is get them a gift certificate from a local camera store or http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=rooty06&A=getpage&Q=giftCard.jsp

The EOS 1D is quite a serious camera and I would have no doubt that

1) This person already knows precisely what they want
2) Anything you may be thinking of buying for this camera is likely to be quite expensive.

I would not recommend a lens, as they are quite a minefield and everyone at that level has their own preferences according to their style and type of photography.

I own a couple of Nikon DSLRs and currently I am thinking of a new tripod. Specifically a Manfrotto 055CLB set of legs with the 322RC2 side pistol grip head. Here in Australia that will cost me around $450AUD, I would imagine for you around $300?

Filters are again an individual taste. Most photographers play with them and then give up, preferring instead to apply filters in post production on the computer. Circular Polarizing filters are about the most useful, but make sure you know in advance what size lens/es you are buying for. (Written on the lens or lens cap possibly a circle with a line through it and then a number like 67. This means 67mm attachment)

In short this person bought this camera because they knew exactly what they wanted, you will need to get some better idea from them as to what they are seeking next.

I strongly agree with “teef_au” in that anyone who owns/has purchased a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II is a serious photographer, and knows exactly what he/she wants and needs. If you are not familiar with the lenses they have, mention that someone referred you to the Canon “L-series” lenses. I shoot promotional photography with a Canon EOS 30D myself (it cost $1500 for the body, compared to $5000 of the 1Ds Mark II), and I am about to upgrade to some L-series lenses.

Here is top-notch Canon L lens with awesome range (28-300mm):

Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM Autofocus Lens

But echoing what was said earlier, the expense of any quality lens/accessory for an EOS 1Ds Mark II won’t come cheap, so I’d double check with the photographer first before spending any serious money on anything.

Hope this helped!
