As a general rule, I prefer to let kids work things out for themselves. But if things are getting out of hand- loud yelling or anything physical(fists flying, kicking, etc.), then they get sent to time-out. Once they've calmed down, you can effectively deal with them. If need be, take away privileges. Once the kids start resolving things on their own in a mature manner, make sure you praise them for it.

Scare the sh** out of them. I have 15 nieces and nephew, all I had to do was scare the oldest one into thinking i could do something horrible and word travels fast so I never have any problems and all of them love me and respect me. If i take them out to the park or mcD's they all behave fine. Trust me scare them Sh**less.
