I'm sure there are many reasons why people are more faithful to religion, as many different reasons as there are different people. In my experience people become faithful to a religion for one of the following reasons. I'm not stating my personal beliefs, just my observations:
The need to fit in, socialize, and be part of a group. (When is the last time you went to church. Did you find it odd that everyone dressed, acted, and talked the same?)
The need to raise their children in a structured, healthy, moral environment. (We will raise our children in the environment where they can be taught the same principles that we believe in, this is a good thing).
The need to make sense of and get help through a traumatic event, hardship, or struggle. (If the church can get you to believe in a being that lives in the sky that hasn't spoken to any of his followers in 2000 years, and that we are supposed to believe he exists without any solid proof, and furthermore we are supposed to believe our spirits will live with that being forever if we do what he says, then it will be easier to cope with our own impending death, and the death of loved ones and friends).
A desire to be seen as a moral, upstanding member of society, and to use this position in society to grow a business. (If you are a member of a church organization, you are going to get more customers to come to your business and spend money).
A way to make a new start in life. (The outsiders, losers, outcasts, reformed drug addicts, reformed prostitutes, reformed corrupt politicians, reformed murderers, can always have a place to go to start over).
A way to accept and understand death. (There is no solid proof that anything happens to a human when it dies other than what sciences already knows, which is that human ceases to "live", or be animated, and it decomposes. There is no evidence that anything happens to any part of a human when it dies, but religion helps people accept death by telling them that something else does happen, so they can accept it easier).
----------------------------------------------------------------
On the flip-side I will also add my thoughts on the reasons why organized religions exist:
A governmental need to control citizens in mass quantities. (Citizens that are involved in religion believe they must obey governmental laws, so the government really doesn't have to worry about being overthrown. Nice little plus there eh?).
A justification for war, and killing of other people who don't agree with the religion. (The principles our nation was founded on, and believe every day are at risk and by fighting this war, we can keep those principles safe by going to war against, and killing the humans that have violated those principles).
A justification to parents for using son's and daughters in a war, and a justification to parents for killing a son or daughter in a war. (We are sorry your son or daughter had to die for this war, It is God's will).
A justification for citizens to accept taxation by the government (God taxes you and we have made you believe that is right, so why don't you want to pay your taxes to the Government?).
A justification for having citizens trust politicians at face value. (A politician can use the blanket of religious belief to gain trust among citizens without being questioned by citizens).
Did you know that most politicians are businessmen or lawyers? Isn't that interesting !! Our countries are controlled by businessmen and lawyers, thats all a politician really is. In my opinion, businessmen and lawyers are two types of people that will tear your stomach out if they think theres a nickel in it !!
Justification for control of citizens by law enforcement organizations and court systems. (We do what the police and the courts tell us to do, even if we don't agree with it, why is that?)

Good question. Yes.
Organised religion was important in a time where everyone had nothing to live for (look today at the places where religion works best, third world countries).
Lack of confidence in yourself or not being happy with what you have in life will always drive the idea that the afterlife will be better and so its all ok for now.
Sadly many people (christians and muslims mainly) confuse spirituality and religion:
"people who are too proud to accept jesus wont get into heaven" - wow I was under the impression god and jesus were all forgiving. Isnt living a good life good enough? If you asked jesus himself and not the people who wrote the bible in order to RULE then you might well be surprised.
Be good to yourself, your family and those around you. If there is a heaven this will be enough to guarantee admission. Trust me.

People tend to be faithful to cult leaders when they lack self esteem; ie Jim Jones, David Koresh. When you meet the true living God, Jesus Christ, He gives you true love so you don't need to go looking for it in a cult.

It sure seems that way sometimes. I mean - why else would religions tell their people that they are dirty rotten sinners from birth and it is because of their sins that the greatest man in history died? Fortunately, there are many smart people out there (more everyday) who realize that Religion is a tool to help us get through life - and the goal is to follow Joy. This sort of mentality empowers people and inspires people to reach higher heights. I think the scales are tipping and folks from all religions are looking for the love and empowerment in their religions (and are finding it!). Hallelujah!
Peace!

No.
Lacking self-esteem means that a person is depressed. Depressed people feel hopeless. This kind of person is more likely to fall into sin because of their despair. Despair is a tool of the Devil to get us to become slaves to sin. A person who is living in sin is not living according to Christianity. Jesus gives us hope.
If you are talking about Pride, people who are too proud to accept Jesus won't get into Heaven. Only one who humbles themself like a little child can get into Heaven.
Self-esteem and selfish Pride are not the same thing.

Well people are more religious if they lack integrity.
If you do the right thing in your life, you will not need religion. Every human being knows right from wrong. it is just a question if they choose to do the right thing. if they don't and they get caught , then they run to religion to feel better. which is unethical.
