God punished him to lie on his belly for all eternity? Does this not make sense to anyone else? What kind of punishment is that? Or do you just take it as a fairy tale and not truth? I mean God Punishes the devil later on in the bible but whats the point of including a verse explaining why God Had the serpent slithering on its stomach when it wasn't the serpent it was the devil? If you believe it as truth then what did the serpent do before his punishment?

Well daisykristina, The bible is Either the true word of God...or its symbolism. Its either Fact or its not. you can't change things around to fit your beliefs...thats like forcing them to be true...even though they aren't.

Hey Eva Check this out! You try reading! The whole story is about as true as Greek mythology

Gen 3:14
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

The Bible does not say whether or not the serpent crawled on his belly before God cursed him. The book of Genesis does say that God saw all that He had created, and it was very good. This included the serpent. Eve had evidently seen the serpent before. She talked to it without fear. (Does that make you want to ask if all of the animals could talk to man before man was cast out of the garden?) Satan used the serpent to persuade Eve to believe a lie and be damned. The lie was that God told her that to eat of the tree of knowledge would not cause her to die as God had said. So you see that it was a piece of information that Satan used to cause death and damnation to fall upon Adam and Eve.This has continued to this day. Satan STILL uses pieces of information to cause men to believe a lie and be damned! As for what the serpent did before Satan used him, file it with 'Did the animals all talk to Adam and Eve before they were cast out of the Garden of Eden?'

I've often wondered that, too. I mean, if the serpent was the devil in disguise, then why should all serpents be punished for it? It's not their fault the devil used their flesh as a disguise.

Somebody had to come up with a reason why snakes didn't have any legs. Believe it or not, that was the winner.

I have heard a story, but cannot verify it as true, that a group of "creationist palentologists" were once discovered trying to present a "fossil" snake they had faked legs on.

Everything you need to know is in the Bible. The Old Testament is a history book. The two commandments in the New Testament are how we should live our lives today. God Bless!

I think the whole lying on his belly thing was God casting him down out of heaven, and into the depths of hell. Way before the fall of man. Satan was turned into a snake for disobeying God, then once he got power by decieving God's people, adam and eve, He grew more evil, and more spectacular. The more we disobey god, the more we glorifify satan, and the stronger he becomes.

Using the word Serpent was intended to be symbolic and describe what Satan is like. Subtle, patient, yet quick to strike when the moment is right.

I was taught that he had legs prior to the fall. (In addition he was cursed to "eat dust." Do you know any snakes that have dirt diets?)

Well, I "got better."
