HI, i was wondering what type of mesh to use for building breeding cages for cockatiels. I heard that there is zinc in hardware mesh. What kind of mesh do you use without a bird getting poisened? I heard you have to scrub it with something.

If you are a person that builds homemade cages, have you ever had a bird get poisened from the zinc? What do you do to keep the cage zinc-free?
thnx

I built my own bird's cage at home, and i use screen from windows. I bought a whole roll, and the hardware guy told me it's pretty resistant. By birds are good and happy in there, it doesn't hurt them, and its strong. They can also climb on it without breaking it. So, yeah, i'd say buy a roll of window's screen. Oh and for them to perch, i use wood stick from outside trees. I secure them into the screen, it won't move !... good luck

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

don't use mesh, it's like a cheese grater on feathers, knocks them to pieces. use bars that way if the bird flies at them the feathers won't be as badly damaged.
