Just give the number to a friend and get them to call and ask who it is :)

There is no free service for this, and the cheapest I know of is £195 - not cheap!!

If it is upsetting you, get your service provider to block the number.

If it's a friend, they will contact you by some other means when you don't answer them.

However, it could also be a scam. As soon as you answer, you could be paying up to £1.50 a minute to be told you have won a prize. Except, you won't have won a prize and you'll be out of pocket before you know it.

It could also be a genuine wrong number.

Try not to dwell on it.

If you know the telephone number, you can enter the area code and the middle three digits on http://www.thedirectory.org/pref/ . That website will give you the state, approximate city, and the type of phone it was (Cell vs. Landline). If the number showed up as "UNKNOWN" or "PRIVATE", I don't know where to look for that and I don't believe you can. Best wishes in your search!

***Update: Sorry, I thought you meant for US telephone numbers.
