yes they are because they do not have to do anything people tell them, they are not governed or have to pay taxes and they are not slaves to money or work .
bad side to it is that their hygeine and health suffers, they have no love or comfort and noone cares about what happens to them

Huh, interesting question, you place in religious section. So money = freedom. One thing i thought about when i read your question, was that Big J left his parents house as a young man, and was homeless until he died. He was the ultimate hobo. He went from city to city spreading the word. On that topic another great guy to look up on the Internet is St. Francis of Assisi :)

I've wondered about this also. Living close to Manhattan, I can't ignore the human aspect of actually seeing homeless people. I have also come up with good reasons for thinking that they are happy and free and not so.
Having nothing to loose is liberating, but freezing your *** off and having nothing to eat squeezes out time for artistic inspiration.
So my answer is "I don't know".
PS-You have read On the Road right? that is a book about what your asking. About being a beatnik. It influenced me in a real way.

Being Free is a state of mind. You can have all the riches of the world like money, things, the best job, the most loving friends and family and still not be free because you are unhappy. You can also have no one,own nothing, and live in prison and still be free. The walls set up by yourself and your mind is what keeps you from being free. There is nothing worse than a mental prison. I think if you would ask anyone who is sick in the head and they would agree.

I think to a certain degree they are "more free than the rest of us" simply because they are liberated from the day-to-day responsibilities we generally have. But, the other day-to-day things we have (love from our families, social interactions, proper nutrition, etc.), IMO, would be like a social imprisonment. It would seem to me that they are missing out on all the things in our life that make us truly liberated humans. I don't know but, I can't imagine living my life completely alone, with no family and being considered a "social outcast".
AND, I honestly don't think that "with money comes freedom". I know people who have tons of it but are imprisoned by other things (disease, physical handicaps, emotional instability, bad relationships, etc.).
Interesting question though!!

those who live a " hobo life style " may be freer in some respects, yet there are many aspects to their lifestyle which are not the best. remember the grass always seems to look greener on the other side of the fence.

The plight of the hobo is long standing the united states. Wars have been fought, freedoms denied. For more on the american hobo, see John Hodgman's, "the areas of my expertise", or visit:
