I have never been a fan of religious art, new age art or fantasy art, at least not as a vehicle for true substance in our current society, so what is it that can touch the viewer and inspire thought approaching enlightenment ? Is this possible? Is it enough to paint something truely beautiful? Is it merely the artists style that can bring the observer to awarness or is it the content??

By all means paint what is beautiful inside you, but expect people to see only what they want to see. You will touch people who are open to it, and others will simply think it's pretty...

My personal motto is "PAINT JOYFULLY. ('cuz if you don't, people will know...)" But in my experience, the best way to express your belief is not just by showing it or talking about it, but by LIVING it.

In the dictionary, enlightenment refers specifically to a religious experience. However, if you look in a thesaurus, you will find illumination, which, among other things means: Something that serves to explain or clarify: The use of enlightening, when referring to art, means exactly this....explaining or clarifying. Art is a visual experience, that means something different to every person who views it. Rarely does a person see and feel the same thing as the artist who created the painting. The artist may have been the instrument, but the person viewing is the receiver.

Yes, for some artists it is enough that they paint beauty, and for the majority of people who see it, beauty is enough. But, were I to paint a picture of the sea during a storm, I may see it as beautiful (I really enjoy storms ..LOL ) but you? You may see danger, death, destruction. See what I mean?

So, in answer, yes, people can find enligtenment in art.

Art can enlighten a viewer.
However, it's difficult because most
of us see what we want to see.
