Yes it is common especially in the west for a Muslim woman to help her husband in financial support. It is certainly not a requirement, but the religion says that her money is hers, if she wants to relieve her husband a little, then there is nothing wrong with that.

The tranliteration of the requirement that the husband have the ability to support his wife financially is to clearly draw that the person is responsible and is a good provider. There is no demand that the wife be a house-wife. In the both the east and west there are a lot of professional women who are working (take a look at UAE, Egypt, Malysia, Pakistan, India, Canada, US etc.). Helping provide a better nest for her husband and her family is a great thing and would only make their relationship stronger. What better way than to help in the betterment of their offsprings and themselves...

Let me tell you 'bout my family, I was born & raised in a Sunni Muslim family. My Dad is an Engineer & my Mom is an Architect. In Islam, a man, who become as a husband & later a father is fully responsible on his family (himself, spouse & infants) physically, emotionally and of course financially.
Both men are women are allowed to work but a husband MUST give up a portion of his income for his family but for a wife is NOT a MUST. I'm currently studying in a college and soon to be an accountant, my 3 sisters in hi-school & my 2 lil bro' still in primary school. Yes, of course.. My Dad pay our fees but my Mom do help us too. It is a symbol of love & trust between a husband & wife to upbring their children well.
I do agree, some Islamic countries didn't allow or not recommended ladies to go out for work but in my country, Malaysia, our political leaders & Muslim scholars permitt both men & women to go out for work & studies. Our Governer is a well-known iron women in Asean; Dr Zetti Akhtar Aziz.

the responsibilities of men are clear according to the Quran. men are responsible for supporting the family. if a man could not do his job the woman has the right to get a divorce if she wants. and if she chooses to work and help out then it's totally up to her.
