Well I have a son that just turned 5. From a mothers point of view you probably shouldnt get anything that makes too much noise (or any noise at all) and nothing that has alot of pieces (like train tracks or something that needs to be put together) because with a 5 yr. old the pieces will get misplaced. Maybe a large car or a playhut tent (those would probably cost under $20) I got my son a kidz cam digital camera. It only cost $20 and it think its a great way for him to be creative, but it does require a pc, and it comes with a usb cord and software. It can also be used as a web cam so maybe it can help yall stay in touch. Since you said you would have to mail it, im assuming that maybe you dont get to see your nephew much.

I am a mother of a 5 year old boy. I would suggest a $20 toys-r-us gift card. X-mas at that age is crazy. One toy looks like the next toy. Having the gift card let us go together and pick something special from you or allows me to put the $'s towards something biggest that he might enjoy. It's also obviously easy to send in a card.

several ideas for you
blocks-if sending in the mail try legos
books/tapes/magazine subscription(kids love to get their own mail)
dvds-
tickets to a local child-friendly museum/theater/movies
some thing to add to a growing collection-rocks, books, cars, etc
camera was a good idea but remember the cost of film or printing of digital pictures so maybe send a gift cert to cover those
craft materials(paper, crayons, markers, stickers, coloring books/sketch pads, etc)
try to stay away from electronic items unless you send plenty of batteries and the sound can be turned off.

you should continuously get a e book for him, i'm particular that his mothers and fathers will rejoice with some thing tutorial if he's were given a lot of toys. purchase a classic like Lord of the earrings of The Chronicles of Narnia, his mothers and fathers would have an excuse to ascertain to their baby and bond over a classic tale.

I bought my 4 year old a "Elmo in Grouchland" DVD. I believe I paid $14.99 for it. You could also try the Sesame Street Store. They have a lot of nice, inexpensive items.
