Say you had a valid license, but didn't have the physical card on you. What are the penalties (I know they may range from state to state), but in general. And if you want to be specific - what are the penalties in Maine?

Cheers!

In reality, probably nothing. If you aren't stopped and asked, no problem. If you are, tell the officer you have a valid license but don't have it with you. Answer "Yes sir, I do, but I left it home" when he asks "Aren't you aware you should have your license with you when operation a motor vehicle?"

He will take you name and date of birth, perhaps social security number and go back to his car where he will check your status based on that information. If it comes back valid, no wants, no warrants, he will probably tell you to make sure you get your license in your wallet next time you drive, and wish you a good day. If he does write a ticket, it will basically be a fix-it type, just take your license to the clerk of the court and show you have it, and the ticket will be dismissed.

Most courts will drop the charge if you can prove that you were licensed. Most police will check your license status when you're stopped and will often not even write a ticket if you are licensed and they are satisfied that you are the person who you claim you are.

A few courts will find you guilty of failing to produce your license upon request, or failure to carry it with you but this is usually a minimal violation with a small fine and no points.

There are no penalties. they often give you 24 hours to present a valid license or they will wait to the courtdate for whatever offense you were originally pulled over for, and at court you would producee your license.
