Taking 4 year old son, to GP, for 2 Injections. Dreading it, as he always has hysterics with needles. PLZ HELP

Please help me Feeling desperate !!

I haven't told him, if i do,i will make it worse.

He always screams, and won't stay still. So it takes more than 1 nurse, to inject him.

He is always sat on my lap, but that doesn't help. And i struggle to hold him still.

What do i do ? How can i make it easier for him?

I use to take my son to the doctor, and when he needed an injection, the doctor would make him stand up. He would distracted him about how tall he was getting. He would step on his foot, and the nurse would inject the medicine into his arm. We would come out of the doctor's office with him limping and complaining about his foot, and he never mention his arm!! Sometimes I would care him to the car, and say maybe it we went to McDonald his foot would feel better. By the time we got to McDonald's he forgot about his foot and arm.

You can try taking his favorite stuffed animal along for him to hold. I am wondering how long he has been afraid of needles and what happened to cause this fear. Remind him that there is nothing to be afraid of when it comes time for him to get the injections and encourage him to hold tight to his favorite stuffed animal and to close his eyes and take a deep breath and hold it for a minute. Tell him you can't believe what a big boy he is now and how helpful it is for him to sit still. If his eyes are closed and he takes a big breath and holds it the shot will be over before he realizes it. Also you may want to let the doc or nurse be the one to tell him they have to give him the shots. Start the pep talk about him being such a big boy for seeing the doc before you take him but don't mention the injections. Hope this is helpful.

Talk to him about it. He must understand that you will be doing something different. After he has the injection(S), you will be doing something special. He must take the injection without being "held down" to get "it". Then take him out to eat or whatever you told him if he behaves as you want him to. Make a ritual out of doing this when he behaves as he should. SHOTS are never "FUN" but they are necessary at times. I know, I am a diabetic.
