Don't go there. It's hot, dirty, and crime is bad. It's still largely unrestored, no matter what the Tourist boards try to say. Visit, then leave.

it depends exactly what you are looking for .. if a tourist wanted to come visit.. i'd tell them too.. great place for entertainment .. New Orleans is a great city. A tourist will most likly not see any damage caused by Katrina.. unless they specifially went out looking for it. or if you are looking to also work here.
Its only effected the locals. New Orleans still needs alot of work.. and since you will be living here.. and not just visiting.. then you should look into it further.
I myself could never imagen leaving New Orleans.. its one the best cities i've been to in the US .. so much culture.
Why dont you find some kind of forum.. chat link.. or even on myspace for your college of interest and talk to some of the students ?
if you need any other help otherwise.. feel free to message me.

Dear Jerseygirl:
Come and see for yourself. I'm born and raised here and could never leave...this City draws you in. Contrary to the crime reports it is localized and mostly "drug related". Yes it's hot in the summer but so is most of U.S. these days!
There are areas of New Orleans that were untouched by Katrina and as for the schools you should forum chat with students who attend Tulane, Loyola, University of New Orleans before you make your choice. All good schools. UNO was hit hard by Katrina and enrollment has been down but they are back up offering classes as before, along with online classes.
So, make a trip for Mardi Gras, come visit, eat our food, meet our people and decide for yourself.

No not all of NOLA was destroyed. I made it through the hurricane just fine and i still live here, i think you should come. im guessing youre not planing to come here for Delgado (community college) and probably UNO, Tulane, or Loyola. If so then come because those are three really good schools. If youre going to tulane or loyola, theyre uptown and theres almost no damage Uptown and alot of places to live, plus the Garden District is beautiful. If youre going to uno then youll see more damage its right near the lake and alot of the houses on streets near the school got hit pretty bad, but the dorms and apartments on the grounds got redone, and theyre also building new housing thatll be ready for next year. Well i dont know... i hope you decide to come, no matter what school you go to here youll meet alot of great people. New Orleans is full of great food, great music, and friendly people.
have fun, good luck

I live in new Olreans now. If you are going to Tulane or Loyola ( I went to Loyola and loved it, great school) I also went to UNO which I HATED!!!!!!! Anyways if you are going to Tulane or Loyola, which are located uptown, that part of the city is booming and is fine.
The French Quarter is booming also, all together. New Orleans East is still a big mess and so is Lakeview (destroyed still).
Also Metairie, which is where I live, right outside of New Orleans is also booming and fine.
what area or what school are you looking into?
Oh if you are young this is a great party place also during your college years. A lot of fun!!!
E-mail me if you want at mdowning12@yahoo.com, I could possibly tell you the condition your school area is in.
Good luck!

you people saying not to come down here are FOOLS. new orleans is injured but it is healing. if you don't want to come down here, that's fine. it's your loss. but don't infect others with your ignorance. and living in louisiana does not make you an expert on new orleans. only living in new orleans makes you an expert on new orleans. to answer the original question, new orleans is a fantastic place to attend college. you'll be glad you did. i would suggest contacting the college you're thinking about attending and seeing if they can get you in touch with some current students. they'll shoot you straight.

i agree with what most people is saying most of new orleans is destroyed. I f i was you i wouldnt go back to stay cause rent is extremely high, there's killing and much more that a working person might be able to handle. Its really up to you we can give you advice but its up to you to make the decision.

I have lived in Louisiana most of my life. The whole south coast post Katrina is a freakin wreck. New Orleans is wreckage. Yes, it's sort of working, but it is NOT the same. It's crippled and lame and NOT safe. I avoid it like the plague. No one I know goes there after dark. It is especially not safe for people who are not familiar with the area. If you're not packing a weapon, don't do it.
