Are there breaks to help slow or stop the decent if it is over the weight limit? Also, do the chords holding it up ever snap causing a full speed drop to the bottom?

They used to be very dangerous. When the Otis elevator was invented, the main selling point was that if the cables were cut, the emergency brake would stop it from falling. Mr. Otis demonstrated his invention by standing inside an elevator and ordering an assistant to cut the cable. He was unharmed.

I suppose it's still possible for an Otis elevator to crash, but it's nowhere near as likely, and it would take more than just the cable breaking.

We were getting it on contained in the elevator. We desirous to have a smoke in a while which burned all our clothing and the smoke activated the fireplace alarm which disabled the elevator. contained in the propose time I question my personal sexuality, and no matter if I had too a lot to drink that evening!

Elevators did plummit and people got killed or severly injured.

YES this happened numerous times and every time people died in the elevator.
