It is mainly the shape and the material. Really, If you have the ingredients and you have only a frying pan, then use the frying pan as a wok and simply suffer the non ergonomic flat bottom .design.
Having said that, buy a wok anyway for your kitchen. A good quality one can be bought with less than 50 dollars. It is very versatile. If you have no other cooking container but a wok, no worries. It can be a saucepan, frypan, saute pan, slow simmer pot. lol

a wok usually has high sides and a wide shallow bowl for cooking where a frying pan is shallow and has low sides. The wok is designed the way it is so you can move the food around quickly when stir frying and get it all to temp at a quick rate. The regualr frying pan is for frying or sauteeing where the food isnt moved much unless it's to turn it over.

The design of the wok makes it excellant for stir frying. Most of the cooking oil will stay in the narrow bottom and the meat, veggies etc do not get mushy.
Fry pans are flat on the bottom.

A wok is designed to get hot quickly- thus searing whatever meat or veg is put in to it. The shape also allows for tossing food around without it all burning or ending up all over the stove. The frying pan is designed for more gradual gentle heat- it also requires less movement.
