It's going to hurt a LOT when the tongue is pierced. What is your pain tolerance? If it isn't very high, this might not be the piercing for you. If you've ever bitten your tongue accidentally, it's like that times ten. The piercer will use a special set of forceps that lock onto your tongue so you can't pull it back into our mouth as soon as you feel the pain (the body's natural reaction). As the needle is being driven through your tongue muscle, every salivary gland in your mouth will start pumping and you will have drool down the front of your face and shirt. If that sounds like something you can handle:
You have to buy two pieces of jewelry for this piercing. The barbell that you first wear in the new piercing has to be long enough to allow for the swelling that will happen in your tongue. Your tongue will swell a lot and a bar that is too short will cause the barbells to become embedded in your tongue... it tears the hole wider at the top and/or bottom. That's the first thing to beware of. You switch to the smaller, permanent barbell after the swelling subsides.
After the piercing, you definitely need to take care of your oral hygiene. Brush your teeth and gargle with salt water after anything but water passes your lips until the piercing heals. Don't use a mouth wash that is high in alcohol, though. It will slow the healing process. The tongue actually heals very fast, and the swelling should go down after a day or so, but the piercing will still need tender loving care for 4-6 weeks.
The first two weeks are the most important. Eat very soft foods until the site really starts to feel healed. Anything that has to be chewed is bad because your tongue moves your food while you're chewing. That movement and the food coming into contact with the barbell will make the jewelry tear at the edges of the piercing... not a lot, but enough to keep it from healing properly. It will delay the healing process, so use will power and eat the baby food and thin soups and drink the protein shakes.
This is not an easy piercing, but you can have it if you're willing to put a lot of will power into getting it and caring for it. Once it heals, it's important to use a plastic barbell on the top of the jewelry to protect your teeth. You can wear enamel off of your front teeth and also crack a tooth if you accidentally bite the barbell while eating. You have to be careful when coughing because your tongue can bang the jewelry off of your front teeth during the normal motion of a deep cough.
Definitely get the advice and personal experience of your piercer. That's the person who can best answer this question.

Any alcohol free mouth rinse is good.
Avoid anything you might think will numb it during the healing time because these products have drying agents in them.
Sucking on ice chips was suggested to me, but honestly the only thing that helped me was prescription painkillers because the pain of healing was so intense. I was knocked out for three days afterwards.
Make sure that you keep the ball on the jewelry clean, clean, clean at all times forever and a day after you get it as long as you live!! If you notice a white, chalky buildup on it at any point, you need to clean the jewelry more often.
When you wear it, make sure you insert the bar from under the tongue after it heals. That way, if the ball works it's way off, you won't choke on the bar in your sleep or while eating.

i actually enjoyed having my tongue ring while i had it. it only hurts the first and second day. it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. the first couple hours you might want to stick with ice or popcicles, but you can eat almost anything as long as you're careful. don't eat anything small like peas or corn or pasta that can wrap around the ring. but after the second day you should be fine to eat whatever.
for cleaning, go to your nearest pharmacy and get a bottle of dasani and biotene. pour out or drink half of the dasani and pour the biotene in the bottle of water until the water bottle is full and uses that after you eat or drink anything other than water for the first week. then you're good to go.
enjoy it!! it's fun...not in a sexual way either

Long term care...You got to pay attention to your teeth...if you start eroding away your enamel of your front teeth...you get a
...../\...... type of gap forming in your front two teeth. Then is time to take it out.
