I have a 3 yr old lab who is great. the only problem we have ever had w/ him is that he is dog aggressive. He loves cats but can't stand other dogs. Last month my brother in law moved in our guest house with his 6 yr old wiemerramer( spelling sorry). They have to share a yard and because my lab keeps trying to kill his dog we have to take them out in shifts. Is there any way we can get these two male dogs to get along or am I just eat up w/ wishful thinking?

I can't let them fight his dog is all of 70lbs while the lab is 135lbs. My lab would really hurt him.

Good for you for not just letting them have at each other. The size of the dogs involved - well, letting them fight would lead to tragedy. It would be great if you could get professional help from a behaviorist or a trainer - they can show you what to do to help your Lab realize that your bro-in-law's Weim isn't evil. Be sure to manage the situation (dogs in crates instead of being loose in the house, and continue to keep them separated unless you are controlling the situation) Don't ever give them a reason to fight (over toys, food, chewies, etc) When it's dinner time, have the Weim in an area where your dog can see him and feed your dog, by hand if you can. Countercondition your dog to associate the presence of the other dog with good stuff. You will need to repeat this a lot - and don't push your dog, or the other dog, to be very close during this time. Just seeing the other dog is probably enough for your dog. Good luck!

I took my lab/pit mix to my dad's house and he had 4 other dogs there. My dog - also aggressive towards other dogs - got along fine with all except the alpha male (they were the only two males in the pack). The first day was awful, we had to keep pulling them off of each other. But after awhile, they started to tolerate each other. And then at the end of the 5 day trip, we stood in the yard while they played for an hour. They had become best friends.

Dogs are just intimidated by other dogs. They both want to be dominate. In our case, it just took some time and patience - and a few mild beatings here and there...

Good luck, and don't give up hope...just integrate the two slowly.

GOOD NEWS! Yes, you can have peace in the lower 40.
Dogs respond to the pack leader, the alpha male--in this case, YOU! And they will adjust their behavior to please the alpha male.

Your dog is sensing that you don't like having your brother in law and his dog there, and being a lab, will not go after the brother in law, but considers his dog fair game.

I had the exact, same (dog) situation 2 decades ago, and the neighbor whose poodle my lab was chewing on threatened to sue me if something wasn't done right away. In response, I held a 'training day'. With the neighbor's cooperation, we put both dogs--on leashes--close to each other, and when my lab lunged at his victim, he came up on a short leash, got a verbal reprimand, and was beaten severely about the head and shoulders with a rolled-up newspaper, which didn't do any physical damage but got his attention. This went on for about 10 minutes--until the dogs were calm with each other--and after that, we didn't have any physical altercations between them, even though they never got to be friends.

Also, think how you would feel if you brought home a second dog you WANTED to make a part of your household, and think and feel good towards that dog--your lab really does pick up on your feelings.

you can take him to doggy training classes and they will help socialize him with other dogs, maybe its because its his yard his territory he doesnt want to share, labs are overall well tempered dogs, but we have a lab and she isnt great with other dogs either, maybe try going to a dog park (be sure to keep him on the leash) and see if he reacts differently! good luck!!!

It's all about witch one is top dog.You have to let them go at it.That is the only way to get them to get along. But keep an eye on them so one does not hurt the other one too bad. There can only be one top dog.

Maybe you should get them neutered if they aren't already.
