I have diabetes and 2 or 3 times a year I have my blood checked for a couple of different things. Being over 60 they always throw in a PSA check. It rose in 6 months from 3.0 to7.7. Normal is .o to 4.0. Has anyone had similar experiences and what was the outcome?

PSA is produced by both healthy and diseased prostate tissue. An elevated PSA may mean that you have any of the followng conditions:

1) BPH. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, meaning non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate.
2) An infection of the prostate
3) Prostate cancer

First thing to do would be to have a consult with a good urologist. He will probably do a repeat PSA exam, urinalysis, and an ultrasound. Based on those results, he may recommend a biopsy if he suspects cancer, or antibiotics if he suspects infection. This sort of rise can indicate an aggressive cancer, so I'd get myself to the right doctor as soon as possible.

I am both diabetic and a prostate cancer survivor, so take this as experienced advice.
