I visit Amsterdam every year.When you fly into Schipol airport go to the train station.When your there go straight to the tourist information stand.They will find you a great hotel at big discounted prices.They even book it there and then. This is by far the best way to find the right hotel in the right area for your budget.
We stay in the best western in rembrant plien.Which is very good ,safe,nicely located and sensibly priced.Be warned if you try to book a hotel yourself it will cost you more so go through the tourist board first!! And wherever you go please watch the pick pockets.

Your best bet is LATEROOMS.COM, they offer good deals but get a map so that you can check locations before you book, there is a very good tram service in town, just don`t be affraid to use it, lots of free info in the shop opposite the station.

go to the amsterdam web page there's plenty on there, but what's cheaper is hostels, clean and comfortable,
