What could cause a lump to form on my jaw after having a tooth removed?

It's hard, about as big as my thumb and very painful--have also been on antibotics for the last month. So I don't see how it could still be infected

Pay no attention to the cancer answer. Some people delight in scaring you. Call the dentist and let him check it out.

The only way to know for sure is to go back to the dentist. Many questions cannot be answered definately on a computer. You need to be examined by your dentist.
You don't say anything about pain, so I'm going to rule out an abcess pocket.
Is the lump hard or soft? Is it near the gumline?
These things play into factor when diagnosing "lumps" in the mouth.
Please have your dentist look at you.
Good luck!
Happy Holidays!

You definately need to go to your dentist. There may be a piece of bone or tooth in your gum or possibly the tip of an instrument. You may have a pocket of infection and be taking the wrong antibiotic for it. Many different causes.
I hope you feel better soon!
