I drive a car, but but they do not bother me in the slightest.
They are also considered to be 'money making machines' - but they have never cost me a single penny.
Weird.

Your right they should be productive. But the reason they are hated by every normal thinking logical human being including me is because they aren't used for th purpose they were designed. The basic principal behind the use of speed cameras is not to prevent people ever speeding, it's to slow them down at blackspots, dangerous curves, unpredictable road layouts etc. Basically anywhere that there is a genuine risk of an accident.

An accident is NOT likely to occur on a 3-mile straight on a motorway, or on a 3-lane carriageway with a 30MPH limit. So why do speed camera's appear in these areas? If you believe that doing 110MPH along a straight motorway is more dangerous than doing 40MPH past a school located on a small lane, then you'll like them. When you next see a kid get killed outside a school consider this.

i hate cameras, speed and red light ones. They're just money-making schemes, they don't help make the road any safer.
Also what is so great about them is, half of them don't work properly and give false readings. There's been cases in the press where the reflections off of objects like the side of a bus can trigger them and the person driving over the white lines at the time gets flashed.

I don't mind getting caught and pulled over by a cop, it's their job and they're not sneaky about it and you can see them (If you can't see big yellowand orange lines and a big POLICE sign on the back of a car you've got problems) But the cameras are taking place of the cops and cameras only check your speed, they don't do anything about drunken drivers - Surely a drunk driver is more dangerous?

Anyway I can't stand them, thats why I'm getting one of those road angel things this christmas :) It tells you where the cameras are and tells you the speed you should be doing and alerts you if you're breaking the limit as you come up to a camera. Halfords are doing some deals on them at the moment if I remember rightly.

Q: Why do some people HATE - Speed Cameras?
A: Because they compromise road safety by coercing road users to spend time looking out for them and their speed rather than the important safety duties of a driver such as looking out for obstacles in the road, detecting other problems with car and passengers, and general observation of the correct "feel" of the ride of the car.

I have never had problem with them or them with me. I think the average law abiding driver has nothing to worry about, but the ones who think its OK to break certain laws (speed limits, Red lights, bus and cycle lanes, motorway road work speed and lane restrictions) do have to worry.

In fact I find it hilarious that the old money making arguments are still being used.

GARBAGE!

And they ARE put at accident black spots as well as areas where a deterrent is needed.

I am a car driver. I use my car for my job but I have no time for the moaners who get caught and feel as though they should get away with it. These are the same people who whinge about the justice system not being tough enough on criminals yet they forget they ARE criminals themselves.

If you get caught just pay your fine, don't do it again and don't whinge about it to us.

They are set up to extort money from whoever is breaking the law, that's true and fair. Why were they invented in the first place is what bothers me. Authorities say that it decreases death numbers and people pay more attention witch is not true. Drivers that know they are close to cameras, slow their speed, only to step on the gas again when they are out of range.
I've ever been flashed and i broke the law on speeding many times and is not the camera that made me sensible to consequences but an accident. Harder penalties is the solution as an example to others. Speed cameras are money generators, nothing else. Excuse to collect money instead of parking tickets, and they don't teach nothing but revenue!!
Should i chose, i would rather get a ticket for speeding from a real police officer than from a lousy, inert, money printing, sloth, arrogant, metal faced, speeding camera.

Because they are un-American . Speed camera's deny you that fundamental right to confront your accuser. There is something very wrong about being able to be accused and convicted of a crime by a friggin machine.
When a cop gives you a speeding ticket based on a radar reading he also must include what he saw with his own eyes in the information given to the court. The machine has no such requirements.
As far as all that nonsense some posters are parroting about speed being dangerous it's just that nonsense.
Speed is not in of itself dangerous.
Incompetence is always dangerous.
It is entirely possible to drive very fast very safely, But you have to be competent to do it and your vehicle has to be suitable for it and in excellent mechanical condition.

They put then in place as a deterrent to speeders.

I think they are awesome little gadgets. They take a picture of your car, its liscence plate, and a really good picture of your face. You of course get your ticket in the mail a week or so after the fact. It sends via telephone line the pictures and speed info. The company who owns it issues you a "speeding ticket". It is a real ticket and adds points to your driving record. Which will make your insurance rates increase and with enough or blatant disregard will lead to the loss of your drivers liscence.

As for the stupid and ignorant people out there that like to whine and say "They are just a ploy and a money making machine." If you dont break the law you wont get any tickets. If you get caught by a police officer with radar who chases you down and then writes you a ticket is there any difference? No there isn't. It saves us law abiding citizens from having to pay you idiot's. A speeding ticket costs more to write than you have to pay. They do put speed limit signs right before them and that just isn't enough for most of us. People like you don't deserve a drivers liscence and should have to take the bus.

i have to admit i hate the idea of speed cameras even though i have never been fined for speeding as there are alot of loop holes to get around the fines when caught by a camera. saying that i am not a person who speeds constantly however i admit i do tend to go slightly above the speed limits and anyone who says they never speed then i honestly believe they are lying.

sorry but i cant stand speed cameras thats just my opinion

I get confused about this too, speeding kills- this is true, my next door neighbours son was killed by a motorist speeding, many people have been killed by speeding drivers. Cameras do not stop people being knocked over but it is proven that driving slower means a person is less likely to die if you hit them. If people don't want the government to make money from their pockets then don't speed, simple as that surely? If I was speeding and got flashed by a camera I would not be mad at the government I would be mad at myself.
All the people saying they can't see them because they put them in obscure places- what's your point? you shouldnt be speeding anyway! your all piss ed off because you can't speed between cameras without getting caught. We shouldn't need these cameras in the first place because we should all be driving at the speed limit so we can prevent ourselves from killing people, you won't be moaning about it when you hit a small child whilst speeding and kill him/her when they might have lived had you been doing the limit.

Speed cameras are there to save lives, not to make money for the government. And if they are hidden then there are always signs to let you know they are there. If you get caught by one of these then you have not been paying proper attention to the road, and you should not be speeding in the first place.
If you do think they are making money, then please suggest something that would be better than charging a fine to stop people speeding. What else can the government do? Make car companies make slower cars?
I personally think that people who hate them, only hate them because they think they have the right to drive over the speed limit.
