You have to re-enter a VALID key. There's a few programs out there that are FREE that will show you your current key and then let you change it to a valid one (assuming you have avalid one to enter).
You can go to this web site ( http://pages.prodigy.net/larzman/WinXP_Key_Code.htm ) to change it manually!
This program (http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml) is called KeyFinder and will tell you your current Product Key.

You can't. That helps stop people from stealing and making those of us who DO PAY pick up the cost. That's what happens when one half steps...they get half the product worth. As the saying goes...you get what you pay for.
