I'm not sure atheists need an outlet. So, maybe atheists demonize themselves with a label.
I am not a believer in many things but I do believe that it is easier to go through life and not make waves. I am not in the business to save anyone and I will not try to. I live for the now and that is to my advantage.

Everyone wants to bask in the reflective glory of their affiliations. I think it's partially ignorance, partially the need to have everyone reaffirm their life choices. People are afraid to step outside their cultural or religious belief systems or see things from a different perspective.
I love shows like "30 days" -- the episode with the guy who lived as a muslim for a month was really powerful. It makes you think about how intolerant we are as a society.
I took a look at wikipedia and they have some info on the pejorative definition of atheism. I'll post the link below:

It's the human condition of fear of the unknown. The same is said of Muslims, wiccans, Hispanics, bikers, rappers,,,on and on.
How many Christians do you think have sat down with an atheist and listened to them, rather than preaching at them? The Bible does not teach bias, but love, it has been interpreted to serve denominational needs.

I can only speak for Christian groups and yes I do. We are not to judge ANYONE, that job goes to non other than Jesus Himself, we have no right in that area. We are to love all man kind no matter what their beliefs.

First Impressions...??? Not all think the same thing about atheists. Not many of those who have different religions know atheists completely either.

Religions persist by attracting and retaining believers - they compete for believers. That means that they have to be denigrate non-believers. These lies about atheists are a symptom of the values that enable religions to persist. They are evolution in action.

Religions use emotional arguments to gain and keep converts. They don't like groups that counter them with facts. Religions tend to discourage members from independent thinking. Atheists tend to encourage it.
