Plasterers jointing tape/drywall tape is no good for what you want to use it for.You can get a gossamer thin tape for cracks like you have, for walls, ceilings. It's so thin it's overpaintable. But anyway I would go along the cracks with a pointed tool to make the crack wider/deeper. You just won't get any filler of any consequence in otherwise. Dampen cracks before using an "easy sand" filler, much easier to flatten when dry.

The tape you are talking about is a tape for when you are covering up cracks when putting up drywall.
The only thing you can do is fill in the cracks with filler, lightly sand them down and then prime them with an oil-based primer before you paint.
Sorry....

the tape you on about is a jointing tape plasteres use to cover joints in plasterboard you will not need that all you have to do is run a stanley knife blade down the crack to open it up a little then fill with your filler applying plenty of pressure you should be fine then and if needed runa bit of sand paper over them to finish them off

If the cracks are small I suggest you use Polycell "Base Coat" available from B&Q etc. I used it in a bathroom which had plaster with lots of small cracks in it (SMALL being the operative word). It goes on just like paint absolutely brilliant...can't see any cracks now.

It also depends on what type of plaster you've got. If you've got lime plaster you may run into problems using gypsum filler.
We had our lime plaster walls skimmed some time back and the plasterer used gypsum on top... the consequence: it didn't adhere properly and we've had to do alot of "making good" since.
I would recommend using Lime Putty if you're filling a lime plaster wall.
