As a person who has lost all hope in this life, I find myself forced to believe in god, and Christ. I find myself needing to believe; believe that there has to be something else. I can't help but believe and I do...I also know someone who has lost all hope in life. This is why she has turned to religion and is a "devout "christian." ; because there is no longer hope in life, so she must believe in "god." However, I'm always amazed by atheists because they seem so smart to me, and not brainwashed......They create intelligent responses to everything. On the other hand, "christians" seem extremely brainwashed....There is even a term..."Religiosity disorder." Everything that atheists believe in is a fact or can be proven.God probably created this because he wants faith, only faith, right?..yeah Well, I don't know but because I've lost all hope in this life and subconsiously refuse to believe that this is it, I believe in God, but atheists are more functional in society than "christians"

The first answer is the correct one.
God does not exist. It is an imaginary character in a book of bronze age fiction. Nothing more.
The fact that christians have a lower IQ than atheists (this is a statistical fact folks) is because christianty abhors education. The more education and IQ a person has, the less tolerance they have for such childish nonsense.

Everyone is an individual! There are intelligent people among both atheists and Christians, just as there are brainwashed individuals among both groups. Don't let the fact that many people come to Christ after losing all hope in everything else fool you. It might be considered by many a real sign of intelligence to recognize your own limitations and know when to look to God for help. (And what's so impressive about laboring under a false sense of security anyway?)

I can't help but wonder about the Christians you've met, though, if you feel that atheists are more functional in society than Christians are. Some of the most confident, joyful, loving, and well-adjusted--not to mention intelligent--people I have ever met have been Christians! Perhaps you need to widen your circle of Christian acquaintances! Have you found a good, loving Christian church to attend? If not, I would highly recommend it! Also, if you're in college, have you checked to see whether there are any Christian clubs on your campus or looked into joining your college's honor society? (Honor societies often have many Christian members.)

Yoda Green: The fact that you would make such a sweeping generalization as your statement about Christians having lower IQs than atheists reveals your own ignorance. What a ridiculous assertion! There are intelligent people in every belief system--whether or not they believe in God. (And there are also many skewed statistical studies out there! Everyone knows that, if you look hard enough, you can find statistics that will back up almost anything you might like to prove!)

I hate to break this to you, but no one group has a monopoly on intelligence--not even atheists! Sorry to disappoint you! (However, spiritual understanding is a matter of the heart, more than the intellect--though that doesn't mean that believers have no solid intellectual arguments to back up their beliefs, but simply that there is something MORE than intellectual arguments supporting those beliefs.) You are simply engaging in your customary practice of seeking out every possible opportunity to insult Christians! Don't you have anything better to do? If you must argue, at least say something that makes sense!

Sorry, I do not agree with you... Athiests may seem more intelligent or educated than the run-of-the-mill Christian, and there are some Christians who act brainwashed and somewhat like clones, but those are the extremes of both cases.

Athiests, for instance, miss the explanation for the "Big Picture" i.e. GOD! They also tend to hold onto the bad guess of evolution (Not theory) as to being fact when it is being disproved more every day by science! So how smart is that?

And down through history there have been some extraordinarily bright stars in humanity who were believers.. ever hear of Sir Isaac Newton? or C.S. Lewis?

Christians believe in science as long as it is truth and not fable. That is why a lot of people get confused about Christians being slow to adopt every new notion that comes along.

And of course, some things have to be taken by faith... but faith leads to substance when it is faith in something real, like God.

I don't know about others, but I'm confused. Are you a Christian or Atheist? If you're a Christian, why do you hate being Christian so much? You're living in a free country, you have the rights to choose what you want to believe in. If you believe in God or Christ, then you must have faith. If you want to have faith, you have to have hope. If you have lost all hope in life, then you've lost all faith. So you couldn't be a Christian.

But if you're an atheist, you wouldn't see atheists as "them", you would see atheists as "us".

I also believe that intelligence has nothing to do with your faith. As an atheist, I just chose to be who I am because I see no reason to do otherwise. You're not born a Christian, you're converted at somepoint in your life. But I think intelligence is determined at birth, and it has to do with your parents's genes, whether they have good genes or not.

If you're sincere about this, it's maybe the best thing I've seen here from a believer. My highest respects.

If believing is helping you and your friend when things seem hopeless, then I encourage you to continue with it. But please think more about that "faith" stuff that you talked about near the bottom. I think you may be close to understanding something about the role of faith in religion that few believers here understand.

As you've noticed from atheists' responses, it is clear that religious belief is dead in the water with respect to any evidence. The first step in developing real faith is to admit to that fact, to recognize that you're only deluding yourself if you claim to have evidence for the important religious claims. You don't. But that doesn't mean that you can't believe. Once you've admitted that there is no evidence - that the atheists are right about that part of it - you're in a position to recognize as well that you can still choose to believe on the basis of pure faith.

Now, if you do that, I think you're wrong in your belief, but I still can respect you for holding those beliefs honestly. Lots of people are wrong about lots of things, myself included. The advantage that I as an atheist have over all of the believers who claim to have evidence is that I'm not living a constant lie. You can have that kind of honesty AND religious belief at the same time, if you recognize that your belief is based in faith and not evidence.

Best wishes and Merry Christmas

As an atheist, I must respectfully disagree. I don't think atheists or religious people are necessarily more intelligent. Intelligent Christians have just examined the same evidence I have and come to a different conclusion. It's all in how one reads what's given to them.

There are 4 billion people on this planet 2 billion of them never even heard of jesus, christ, or god. Does that make them atheists? If you believe in something why would you care what others think?

Ask the atheists THAT. They will tell you that there is no god!!

"atheists are more functional in society than Christians"?
Are you saying that the 85% of U.S. citizens who believe in God has done little/nothing when compared to the other 15%? Which world are you living in?

Get over it. If Christians are brainwashed, so are atheists!!

O.K.. why not try being a Muslim then?

Yes, God takes away earthly intelligence and endows His followers with divine guidance. That is why they give even their lives to earn God's pleasure which the worldly wise really doubt about.

Atheists have an open mind - to opposed "closed mind"
They don't burden them self with the restriction religion
puts on peoples thinking. They are free to examine and
question everything in life without worrying about being
a sinner and anti-christian.

I don't think they are smarter than believer, they just seem
to be , because they don't need the crutches of religion to
walk through life.
