In USA the court most of the times convict the people who are involved in any petty crimes by orderring them to do community service for a number hours as a punishment. The community service can be working in a religious instiutiion with out any compensation or working for the county doing some public work etc. Our courts just convict the accused by sending them to prison where they become more dreaded criminals. Can some one take my message to Indian Judiciary?

I beg to differ with your views on community service. We do have Community Service in India from ancient times. There were Schools, Choultries (Dharamsalas), Free food centres (Kshetras) Hospitals etc built for the community in various places in our country. Our ancients thought serving food for money was the worst crime. Now you can see the change. American way of life has brought every service under the exchange of money. Now we have to pay for even using roads. There are many service organisations like RK Mutt, RSS and others doing a great service at the time of natural calamities like Sunami, Floods and earth quake. Public Service under compulsion is a punishment. America is a Country where every thing is valued by $. Let us not follow anything American good or bad.

A punishment is when you are made to do something you wont enjoy.
We Indians enjoy doing community service. Look at the Mandirs and Gurdwaras. Community service is a privilege for us Indians. It is never a punishment.
I was in New York at the time of 9/11. Immediately after the attack I went to the area and asked what I could do to help. I was not allowed, because I did not have a licence for giving anykind of help.

I think there is some misunderstanding about working of Community Centres. The Community Centres are not created to punish the criminals; they are servicing the community irrespective of any one indulging in criminal activities. The base of Community centre is to service the community and not to punish the criminal. It is very good idea of creating community centre and we at Nischai Foundation are working on this idea since last year. Let me inform all whole are reading this that Community Centre should be heart of every village and should take up daily issues of maintaining peace and harmony in the Community. It is also a responsibility of the Community Centre to provide help at local level to its Citizens. Please do not interpret Community Centre as jails or confession centres. People work for the well being of their fellow citizens and it is a proud possession of the Citizen. Community Centres not only create peace but they do major function of the government in providing help in disasters, education, employment, hygiene, law & order, Human Rights and many more which you never think of. If you know of RSS centre they where community centres but entry in politics and religious affiliation has changed their face. I am not sure if the author is in India or in USA but if you think of working or starting one Community Centre we at Nischai Foundation are ready to help such start-up contact by email nischai_org@yahoo.co.in
