A bench press is performed by laying flat on your back on a weight bench (or floor if you prefer) and "pushing" up on your weights. It works the pectoralis muscles (the major muscles in the front of your chest). You must use proper technique, lest you risk injury.

Another good exercise are butterfly's...using 2 different barbell weights (one for each hand), lie on your back and bring the weights toward your center (the center of your chest). Do each of these exercises 8-15 times (repetitions), 3-5 sets.

if you do a press up with your arms futher apart this will work your pecs and has the same sort of effect as a bench press, ask a qualified gym instructor to show you and make sure you are doing it corectly first
