As you can see, everyone says it's because the melanin stops being produced in the follicles. What others HAVEN'T mentioned is that the hair isn't technically gray. Hair can only grow colored or white, but not gray. The reason it looks gray is because the white strands and the colored strands are mixed. Interesting huh? I just learned that the other day and thought it was cool.

It can be an age factor or an inherited factor but before age it is mostly due to bad health of hair and the person having them. People spending much time in sun, or people who dry their hair in sunlight after washing, hair once dyed (artificially coloured) i think loose colour, by pulling and/or breaking grey hair increases their number. If hair with split or discoloured ends are not trimmed this problem starts. Blow drying or drying hair in hot blowing air, straightning with straightening appliances, curling with hot curling rods and other such things lead to destroy the health of hair which easily leads to grey hair.

The melanocytes stop producing melanin (thats the pigment that colours our hair). Unfortunately, once they stop they can't be restarted.
It isn't that people have grey hair - once there is no melanin the hair is white and just looks grey against the hair that still has colour.

As people grow older the pigmentation that causes hair color gradual decreases. When the melanin ceases to be produced in the 'hair root' the new hairs grow without pigment and appear white.
