Hi, I KNOW this one.. been there , done that!
you need to get a product called blood stop or something like that (don't know where you live). You can find it at any pet shop. It is styptic swabs or powder for dogs. (ferric subsulfate and benzocaine). If the styptic does not work, you are going to have to go to the vets to get it cauterized to make it stop.
Pick up some Bitter Apple while you are out because there is no way he is going to leave it alone. Also, get some extra tape from the vet (the kind you can use on fur) and tape an old sock over the foot for a day to keep it dry. It should be ok by tomorrow, but keep from walking him on pavement because it can re-open it. Good luck!- dd

As a dog groomer and vet tech, I've seen my share of torn or otherwise bleeding nails. Nails can be stopped from bleeding in a variety of ways. We use QuikStop in the shop (a ferric subsulfate mix expressly designed to stop bleeding and available at your local pet shop), but for a nail that opens up once a customer has gotten home, we recommend using flour or cornstarch or even powdered sugar. Take a small amount and press it into the bleeding nail. The object is to give the clotting substances in the blood something to hang on to and clot. Once the bleeding has stopped, you can use super glue to coat the tip so it's less likely to break open and start bleeding again. (Super glue is actually used by vets instead of stitches for some wounds.) The worst risk of a bleeding torn nail is infection since dogs walk through all sorts of things when outdoors. Keep it covered until it's well healed. If there's any sign of infection - fever, lethargy, etc., see the vet, pronto!

My dog, Jack, has torn his nail off, twice and it stopped bleeding by the end of the night.

It sounds like Kelso needs to go to the vet. He might have damage the quick when the nail was torn.

Soap and water is best for germs then put the Neosporin back on it, wrap it back up with a loose fitting bandage. He'll be okay.
