I don't want just plain white, but the cabinets are a dark brown now, and I'd really like to make the place more colorful, and bright.

I would paint the walls a light sage green and the cupboards a light yellow, the work surface either butcher block or white, and the cabinets would be a light yellow as well. Don't forget the floor! There are so many peel and stick vinyl squares in so many colors you can have a blast! I would mix the green & yellow from the walls & cabinetry in a checker board pattern. Window treatments are a really cool place to keep things light. I would use a pullshade with an embelished bottom, it is really easy to do. I would also use hankerchiefs to soften up the window a bit, there are some real clever low cost ideas at any fabric store! Have fun with it!

Go to Sico.com and check out the colors that are trendy.

You don't have to use white. Any color that has a bit of yellow in it will bring life and light into your room. You might want to consider a green.... almost a cross between green apple and pickle green. It would look quite nice with your dark brown.

What direction is your kitchen facing? If it is facing south, you'll want a cooler color, maybe a nice robin's egg blue. That is the color that makes any room look bigger.

Whatever you decide, know that white is not a color. It is the absence of color and paint is the cheapest way to change a room so experiment. Have fun.

Shades of gold are very popular in decorating right now. At www.behr.com, check out colors called Calm Air or Claire de Lune. These would complement the brown of your cabinets very nicely, they are part of the yellow family which lends a sense of cheer and happiness, and they are light enough to brighten a room.

Another helper for a small room is new light fixtures. You might consider a new fixture that emits more light. This can work wonders for a dark room.

MAY BE THE PROBLEM IS JUST THE LIGHTING. CONSIDER CHANGING OUT THE EXISTING OVERHEAD LIGHT FIXTURE TO A SURFACE MOUNTED COVERED FLORESCENT LIGHT. HARDWARE STORES HAVE SOME NICE 4' UNITS THAT WILL INCREASE THE LIGHTING IN A ROOM 3-4X VERSUS A LIGHT BULB AND THEY SAVE ENERGY
