Are you asking us if we keep trying or are you asking if you are selfish? I saw multiple questions in your paragraph and Im not sure where to start..
I, myself, keep trying to achieve my goal or destination. This is a good quality to have, but sometimes, you have to know when to give up.
As for your second question about selfishness, I think it depends on what you are talking about exactly. Sure, yourself is probably more important than anything else. But that can also lead to lack of consideration. Like everything else in life, I think a good balance of selfishness and consideration is the way to go.

as to giving up, sometimes there comes a point to realize something is not working, and its time to move on,, either to another approach or another job or another relationship,,,,,,
as to putting yourself first,,,, if your single, its fine to always do that, if your in a relationship /and or have children, you have to learn to sometimes put them/their needs first, other times yours, depending on the situation,,,,, its also a sign of maturity to be able to consider others and put their needs/interest first for a while/particular situation, even if they are not your immediate family

Being determined is one thing, but putting this question in 'singles and dating' makes you sound like a bit of a stalker.

just recently stopped talking to a girl who was more selfish and put herself first before others. its one thing to have and achieve goals, its another to put selfishness and material possesions before your friends and family.

Theres an old saying, " if you have never failed your not trying hard enough ". Which means one of two things about you. One, you have failed. Or two, you have set low goals for yourself.
