I haven't. In fact I'm pretty sure there's no such thing.

With that in mind, why don't (some) people do proper research about the breed that would be most suitable for them?

Why not take into account the dog's needs and bear in mind that each breed was originally bred for a working purpose, so will be particularly inclined towards certain traits?

Maybe then people wouldn't be so surprised at having their houses trashed by a dog that was originally bred for intelligence and stamina, after it has been left alone in a 1-bedroom flat all day.

Just a thought...

I think it's time to clarify the point of my question!

It seems that a lot of people when buying a puppy, instead of researching which breed(s) would be best suited to their lifestyle, they choose the puppy on the grounds that "it's cute".

My response is, "of course it's cute, it's a puppy - they ALL are". I wish people would take more care when choosing their puppy and my question is wondering why they don't.

Why just go for "the cute one", ahead of "the one whose breeder I've thoroughly checked out and the one whose breed suits my lifestyle"?

Unfortunately, I have seen ugly puppies. I saw a litter that came in from a backyard breeder that were St. Bernard/basset hound mixes, and their legs were so short and small that they couldn't move themselves, and they were afraid they wouldn't survive.

It was terribly saddening, but their disproportionate body parts made them not cute at all.

I have a question for you since you have come back have you adopted a puppy from your local shelter? I only ask because it's like adults who go to other countries an adopt children when we have so many kids here who need a home. Our shelters are full of dogs and cats who need good homes but yet you where willing to pay outrageous amounts of money for a stray who was probably someones dinner in the near future.

Of course all puppies are cute, in the same way that all human babies are, with their big baby eyes! There is a good reason for this, it is to make us love them and want to care for and look after them. They are helpless at birth and need us to help their survival. If they were ugly and without endearments we would not have the same kind of desire to look after them the way that they should be looked after, and they would not survive infancy.

And what an excellent thought it is! Many dogs and people could have better relationships from the beginning if people would take the time to investigate a little...

This is said to be the world's ugliest dog. His name is Sam. He died Nov. 22 in 2005. I guess some people have seen ugly puppies or else they wouldn't have voted for him in the ugliest puppy contest. He won three times. That's amazing!

Yes! I always thought that our little terrier/beagle mix was ugly as a pup. She's now nine and the cutest little thing!
