Do we have a freedom to choose our faith? From being a baby, then growing old. Our family is the one who tell us about God. But if our family doesnt introduce God, I think I will live in on our own, i will definitely find an answer on my own. IF youre a catholic, most likely all your offsprings will be having the same faith as yours. Im also a Catholic, but i have this questions in my mind...
JUST GIVE ME YOUR POINT OF VIEW...

U are absolutely right. Almost al of us choose the religion of our parents. That is the conditioning that we go thru.

There is no choice that is given.

But at the same time, most religious convertions from one faith to another happen not because of any deep study of alternatives, but because of greed, fear, opportunity etc.

In any case, most religions in essence are the same - all spk abt being good to others, devotion to God etc. So why worry that no choice was given?

I have studied in Catholic schools and college, but I am not a Christain. At the core there is no difference between my religion and Christanity. So why bother so much. Just lead a good honest life.

You do not have to belong to any religion whatsoever.God loves You as we humans are his most beloved creatures. So the faith itself is unimportant in a way.You say you are a catholic and you wonder what will your children be, so need to worry just teach them the basics of the divine law and they will grow up to be as the best people while the religion they choose later on is not very important because they will be good people and that is something we are all aiming for our children.

There is blind faith or mere imitation.
Learning religion from parents or from other people is one of the ways; but the true understanding depends on the individual: he may realize the truth or just imitate traditions.
Only independent investigation of truth can secure freedom of faith. Each man should seek his own communion with the One True God to be loving, steadfast and progressive.

As parents, we are obligated to direct our children in what we think the right way. However, it's always up to the kids to choose what they believe, or not believe in. There are also so many families who don't believe in specific religions and have offsprings who do believe. There are also parents who have different religions than their offsprings, and vice versa. So we do have a freedom to choose, maybe not as children, but as grown ups.

When you are a baby or a young child, you do not have much of a choice. But when you grow up and have your own mind to weigh things and judge and make decisions, the choice is yours. You can choose to keep holding to whatever you have been taught as a child, or choose to go another way.

Yes, we have the freedom to choose.

My family did indoctrinate me and teach me about God, but as I grew up, I found my own path. If they didn't indoctrinate me or teach me, I still would have found my own path. My children won't be forcefully raised atheist and told they can't be religious. I plan to teach them about different religions and let them be whatever they choose to believe in.

Even if I were Christian, I would still do the same. I would still teach them about God and other faiths, teach them to respect all beliefs and nonbelief, and let them choose what they wanted to believe in. I wouldn't force them to follow my beliefs if they truly didn't believe. Then they're just following out of rote and because they felt they "had to", rather than truly believing what they said they believed.

To me, belief is personal and private. True belief comes from the heart, not from a fear of punishment or shame. To believe out of fear or intimidation isn't true belief, but control over a person, and to use any religion like that is an insult to that religion, cheapening it as a tool to achieve your own goals. True belief gives people real, honest hope. Belief through fear is just an illusion.

Neither of my parents were Christian when I was a child. My father has turned to Christ in his later years, thank the Lord.Anyway, I found my religion through looking into several and visiting many different denominations. I have since looked into others as well and have remained where I am as a result of testing my faith.

when you're born, you don't have freedom to choose a religion because you're not mature enough to do so. when you grow up and become an adult, you're deciding for your own life and you choose the religion.
children often get influenced by their families, so, most of the times, they keep the same religion.
i'm an orthodox christian.

that's why they have RE in schools now (religious education). i was baptize as a baby but i don't believe in god and none of my family go to church or read the bible because they believe that they shouldn't have to go church to believe in something. i was giving the choice to believe in a religion or not and I'm glad i did have that choice or id be resenting my family, because fair as i could remember religion of any sort didn't interest me and still doesn't it washes over my head. that's just my opinion.

You have the freedom to believe whatever you so desire, but with that belief comes responsibility. There is right belief and wrong belief. If you make the wrong decision, then you will have to live with it for all eternity.
