Have you considered buying second hand furniture? There is a lot around and little demand for it, so you can negotiate real bargains.
Two beds and frames, $500, curtains and linens $500.
Kitchen table and chairs: $200. Microwave $200. Cookware, dinnerware, glasses. $400
Living Room: sofa and love seat $600. TV somewhere between $100 and $5,000.

It depends on where you live and what you mean by "furnish".
When I hear that word, I think you mean furniture. Your best bet is to check out the local GoodWill's and thrift stores in your area.
Go to yard sales and such.
If you don't, you will spend 10's of thousands. I say this b/c my hubby & and just bought a bedroom suite. It includes the railing, slates, headboard, footboard, box spring and mattress for the bed, also a nightstand w/ mirror, one dresser and an armoire. Total cost $3,000.00. The boxspring/mattress was $1,000 b/c we bought a queen size bed. Get this.....we bought it all at Value City Furniture. If you went to a high end store, it'd be at least double what we paid. Just for furniture for one bedroom!
Futons w/ a mattress on top make a nice bed for guests. You can't even tell a difference!
Ask friends and family members if they have anything they'd like to sell/donate to you. You'd be surprised how many people start out that way. And actually have some pretty nice stuff!
Just remember that you can't do it all at once. It takes time to accumulate houses like our parent's have.
Good luck!
Happy Holidays!

You could do it on the cheap if you go to the Salvation Army store (under $1,000).

Check out Ikea. You will be able to do it for around $1,000/2,000.
