Microsoft Works it's a "little" Microsoft Office, but it's not Office. Office is Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, Access and Frontpage. Works has other programs that are like these programs but more simple and with few options and features. You can read all Office documents (doc, xls, ppt...) and you can create your own, but with a lot of functionalities missing.
It's Xp compatible (there's also an XP version)

Microsoft Works is not the same as Office, but has similarities. Works is more of a Basic Version of Office, it has Word and Excel Capabilities, and it is more home related, i.e. make cards, write resume, etc.
It tends to come pre-installed on new PCs.
Answer, what version are you using. If above Works 2000, (i.e made after 1999, it will work with XP)

Microsoft works usually comes installed on new computers with XP. It is a programme designed to do things like letters, cards calendars, and all sorts of other stuff. It is not like office. It doesn't do word or outlook or anything like that. It was designed for home users who don't need office but still want to do say a c/v or work with documents.

Microsoft Works is like Office, but lacks a few features, if you want a full blown office package, get office, but tbh works is fine and cheaper. Its XP compatible yes

Works is a basic "office" type program, often included by manufacturers. For sure it's compatible with XP, no problem.
If you're considering buying it, compare what it does with MS Office - it might fit your requirements cheaper than the full MS Office, or it might not. Depends on what you want.
