And how do they act?

This can be difficult. Essentially the underlying problem with a sociopath is that they have no remorse or guilt for their actions, or particularly how their actions affect other people. They don't seem to understand right from wrong in the way most people in society do.

Now, if a sociopath is trying to hide being a sociopath (and most sociopaths don't even know that they are) then they just behave like you and I. They will act shocked when something nasty happens to someone.

If you watch teenage boys, the sociopathic behaviour is most commonly evident. These are the guys who snicker and laugh when something painful happens to another person - it's normal teenage behaviour without much frontal lobe. The girls are much better at going "OMG that must have hurt" and going to help, but the guys love to get it on camera and post it on the internet etc...

The wiki page has a good bit of stuff on it. It's called "Antisocial Personality Disorder" in the psych books and it's more common than you might think.

The sociopaths of horror movies and stories are usually quite extreme, notable for gore or intelligence and thus scary (the aim of these stories). The common or garden variety sociopath is on the bus beside you, or working at your workplace, or in a relationship with you. These are the ones who will pick your pocket or steal your mobile phone etc.

They don't care that it is wrong or hurtful or that OMG how are you going to call all your friends now? or whatever - they just see a nice phone that they want and swipe it ...

Many of the people who peddle drugs or break the law in small petty ways repeatedly are sociopaths, but not all.

It used to be called being a Psychopath. Interestingly Wikipedia has a separate page on Psychopathy but if you read it you will find that the two things are really very very similar. So similar, in fact, that they might almost be considered to be the same thing (which I consider them to be - as does the American Psychiatric Association).
