I went down with a nasty sore throat in the early hrs of Thurs morning - forced myself to drive 130 miles for a meeting, but once there went green and sweaty and passed out cold. My throat has virtually closed up and is so painful that I haven't eaten or drunk anything since Thurs - I can't seem to swallow properly. My glands are visibly swollen, I had a high temperature during Thurs (thats gone down now) and I have deep throbbing pain in my joints.
I dragged myself to the GP yesterday - he looked at my throat for a long time and said the white lesions were typical of oral thrush. After checking my blood sugar he sent me away with a single dose of Fluconazole 150mg, plus some Nystatin drops.
I sceptically asked if oral thrush was supposed to make you feel this ill, and he just shrugged. I'm taking paracetemol with dihydracodeine every 4 hrs, but apart from easing some of the pain in my neck and joints, I feel no better.
???

Go to another doctor immediately. Oral thrush is unlikely to produce the symptoms you describe.

It sounds to me as if you have mononucleosis and it is incredibly painful. You will survive although the way you describe it, it may take a couple of very painful weeks. Go back to your doctor and I think you should be put on antibiotics.

Hmmmm, sounds more like tonsilitis to me, that can give you white spots. Oral thrush doesn't wipe you out at all, my friends daughter had it and she was fine with it.

If I were you, I'd get a second opinion. Maybe even a third to make sure.

That's what the doctor is for-
to answer your questions and explain what to expect in the course of your illness...
Use the phone.
