I've tried many methods but they always seem to end up either too 'snotty' or too hard. My kingdom for a nice runny egg!

Bring water to the boil. Keep eggs at room temperature. Prick both ends of the egg with a pin or safety pin (I always keep one in the box). Gently, on a large spoon lower the egg into the water and set the timer for five minutes.

Take off the heat and remove the egg into an egg cup and eat as you normally would.

I think the cold water method is too time consuming and you have to watch the water to see when it boils - and your back is always turned making the toast when it suddenly comes to that point. Quicker to boil a kettle and then bring it back to the boil.

Enjoy your eggs with soldiers.

First have a pan of water n a rolling boil. Prick the egg with a pin at the blunt end. This allows the air to escape and stops the shell from exploding. Immerse the egg in the boiling water for at least four and a half minutes (depends on altitude). You can test by taking the egg out of the water, moving it away from the steam and counting to ten. By this time the water on the eggshell should have evaporated. Before ten - you're on the way to having a hard-boiled egg, if the egg is still wet after the count of ten then it's going to be yucky.

I was told by a very wise woman (my great grandmother) that the way to cook the perfect boiled egg is as follows.
1. Place and egg in a saucepan of tap water, covering egg completely.
2. Bring to the boil.
3. When the water is at a rolling boil (continuous boiling), count slowly to three.
4. Take saucepan off the stove and allow to sit for 1 minute.
5. Enjoy with toast fingers.

Get a pan and put eggs in. Cover eggs with cold water (about an inch above highest egg). Bring to a boil. As soon as water boils put a lid on the pan and turn the burner off. Let sit for 20 minutes and then rinse eggs in cold water to stop cooking process.

once you,ve put the water in a saucepan add a little salt and put on hob on full power untill water starts to boil put eggs gently into saucepan and make a note of the time standing by the cooker all the time as you have to turn down the heat to about medium once it is boiling now the important bit is to time it for eggsactly 5 minutes from when you put them in the saucepan.after eggsactly 5 minutes remove from saucepan with a large spoon place into egg cups and using a small spoon tap the top of each egg and remove a little bit of shell then gently cut a little bit of the top of the egg and enjoy with toasted soldiers.

Put egg in pan of cold water - water should just cover the egg. Bring water (and egg!) to the boil. Time 2 mins from when the water starts boiling. Bingo.

hmmm, as I read your question, I'm inclined to believe you're asking about "soft boiled eggs". If that's the case, I'd go with the three minute answers.
If it's hard boiled you're asking about, I agree with the Little Miss Wonderland and Julia Child!!!!!! Has worked for me for years now.
