As skin grows, epidermal cells are pushed outward where they eventually die and flake off the head. In most people, these flakes of skin are too small to be visible. However, certain conditions cause cell turnover to be unusually rapid, especially common in the scalp. In people with dandruff, skin cells may die and be replaced about once every two weeks, as opposed to around once a month in people without dandruff. The result is that dead skin cells are shed in large clumps, which appear as small, white or grayish patches on the scalp.

The purpose of dandruff is a warning to you that you have dry scalp, you can sort it out, maybe your shampoo is too harsh or you have a skin condition you are unaware of. Ask your hairdreser for advice, it's easily sorted out once you know how. I use Head & Shoulders shampoo - it works.

dandruff doesn't really have a purpose it's just the dead skin on your hed that can not escape from the head (because of hair) and so lies there untill washed etc

I think dandruff is our body's way of saying that we're neglecting our scalp of moisture it badly needs. It can also be an indicator of a fungal infection or when you don't wash your hair regularly.

To remind us our scalp is in need of some natural health. Dryness, bacteria, or injury causes the flakes to appear. To remind us that baptism was a way to teach the ignorant about bathing.
