Assuming your local pound is city run, you should expect adoption fees to be:
$100-125 for a kitten under 6 months of age or a purebred of any age.
$75-90 for a cat over 6 months of age.
$50-60 for a cat over 6 years of age.
Add to that the list of supplies:
Litterbox, collar, food dishes, food, toys, litter, treats, and a grooming brush.
Getting said supplies at somewhere like Walmart will cut down on the costs a little, but when it comes to food ALWAYS get a good quality food from a speciality store (at least Petsmart or Petco, or somewhere similar).
I'd say, in all, you can expect to spend a total of about $300.
That would include the adoption fee, supplies, and extra veterinary services the cat will obviously require (and that is not covered by the local pound--such as needed boosters, fecal examine, Leukimia testing, and so on).

It's $60 for a cat here.
For my two cats I spend about $60/ month on food (I feed wellness canned, and nutro natural choice dry), about $20 a month on litter, plus a good amount on toys. Vet is around $100./year once they're just on wellness/booster visits unless something is actually wrong with them. Older cats (7+) will need yearly blood work and tend to have kidney, thyroid, etc. problems so factor in at least $300/ year there. If you rent also factor in pet deposits, and cost if they damage the house.
I don't use flea preventative because they're indoor only, but I keep some on hand just in case they do get some ($40). Depending on where you live they may need to be on heart worm preventative.

Its about $10.00 to bail a cat out of the pound where I'm from. Over its life, you spend lots of money for food, treats, cat litter, toys, cat bed, pet carrier, vet visits, etc.
