I grew up believing it was wrong to get anything pierced other than your ears. The argument was that other piercing and tattoos were "destroying" your temple. I think this is a social control and a bunch of crap.
What are your thoughts on this?
What about all the other stuff destroying our bodies like pollution, processed foods and drinks, tv, and many other random things etc etc?

To Masha! I have to laugh about you saying you've yet to hear someone that didn't have a speech impediment with a tongue piercing! I HAD my tongue done a long time ago and the only reason people ever knew was they would see the ball flash in the light if they were sitting at a even angle with my face! People at work never knew, and one woman even said to my face she always knew when someone had one. I wanted to stick my tongue out at her so bad! LOL I always hated the speech impediment too.
I've been thinking to get it re-done.

Per Cindy's "If you think it is "social control and a bunch of crap" then why did you post this question for a bunch of strangers to answer? "
I posted it because I was curious what others thought. Am I not allowed to be curious and also offer what I think at the same time? Isn't that called sharing?
Aren't we ALL posting to a bunch of strangers with curiosity and comments here?

You are right. This is something made up by people who don't approve of other piercings because they are not used to them.
You are also right on about other abuse of the human body like overeating and drinking.

If you think it is "social control and a bunch of crap" then why did you post this question for a bunch of strangers to answer? Now my thoughts: I have 3 kids 2 girls & one boy oldest is 19 youngest is 11. I brought then up to respect there bodies. Know there bodies & enjoy what they have. Because they are going to have that body all there life. If they want to go out & stick bolts through there face or other parts they know that they can do what ever they want when they are 18 or out of my house. Because if we pay for the roof over there head then we have a say in what gets pierced. My oldest did just that. She has both nipples & her nose pierced, she did her own ears at 13. She told us upfront hey I am going to do this for my 19th birthday & I want to do it for myself. As her parent we understood her money & her body. But we are more open & honest with our kids then most parents. A lot of people see body piecing as signs of sexual enhancements, which I suppose SOME are. Examples would be Clitoral & tongue piercings which enhance coitus for women and oral pleasure on men. This is usually the sticking point for most people that FORBID THAT SORT OF THING. But all in all it is your body. Do to it what you like. Allow others to do to it what you enjoy. Keep in mind though that people that will hire you for a good paying job still go by the first impression we make.

In early church days, men and women used to pierce one ear to signify that they were "bond slaves" of Christ.
Start by really asking yourself, "why do I want this piercing?"
Is it because you want to be accepted by your friends? Or you want to rebel against your parents? Or you think it's hip/trendy/cool at the moment? Or you want society to see you as an "outsider" or a "rebel?" None of these are good reasons to get a tat or a piercing.
There is nothing in the Bible that EXPLICITLY says don't get piercing. The Hebrews were commanded in the Old Testament not to tattoo their skin because many of their enemies did it.
I think a lot of Christians believe that piercing and tattooing is wrong because you are trying to change the person that God made, you are trying to alter your body in some way, and in effect you're telling God that you don't like the way He made you.
Personally, I am more interested in your own personal motivations for doing or not doing it. Don't let society (any part of it) tell you what is right, listen to Jesus and try to be more like Him.

I'm glad we get to heaven through what Jesus did on the cross, and not by what we do or don't do, or NONE of us would make it. I'm a 44yr old grandmother, (yes that's right), and I have both a tattoo and my belly pierced. Both are discreet, (nobody sees my belly except hubby and myself), and my tattoo is an ankle bracelet. While I would not go against whatever a parent instills in their child (and let's face it, some tattoos are REALLY ugly and kids will regret them one day), that's what I chose, and I think we need to major on the majors!

I'm a lifelong Christian and also believe it's control and a bunch of crap.
Now, let's be practical. Tongue piercing has its downside -- infection, the stud can cause tooth and filling breakage, speech impairments (I have yet to hear clear speech from someone with a pierced tongue), the annoying clicking noises when talking, employer/company rules. Bellybutton piercings have their moments of infection, aggravations when rubbing against clothes.
As far as pierced ears go, my father used to say, "If God wanted holes in our ears, He would have put them there." (Thanks, Dad.)

actually, there was a time when even getting your ears pierced was considered to be the mark of the devil--it's all just a bunch of superstitious crap from people who can't handle living in the present, don't let them bother you

The bible doesn't say you can't. In the old testament it even talks of women wearing a jewel in their nose. As long as you are not doing it for the wrong reasons, like self mutilation, and your heart is right towards God, you're okay.

I think you grew up in a morally repressive area. However, getting your tongue pierced can actually cause medical problems if it is done incorrectly.

Have you heard "No Sex in the Champagne Room" by Chris Rock? Piercings, tattoos, fashions, etc. identify your social class, morals, beliefs. Like it or not, people judge you on your appearance - it is up to you to decide what kind of message you want to send.

The only piercings God approves and allows of is the piercing of His Son and His martyred Christians.
All other piercings are for worldly vanity and pleasure.
